I have been involved with horticulture and winemaking for more than 30 years. For me wine is an ever evolving product, it changes every day from the time the flowers evolve into fruit, through harvest and fermentation, through barrel maturation and in bottle. Wine is fundamentally an expression of the season that was, combined with the soil from which it was raised, finished with guidance and style imparted by the winemaker. I often relate winemaking to being a Chef in that in order to prepare the finest offerings we need to start with the finest of ingredients.
We need to have a vision of what we want to create yet be adaptable and flexible to the changes and challenges along the way. To remain focused and to pay attention to detail and to do the simple things well. Throughout my life I have been inspired and driven to make things, to create. Be it a garden or a sculpture, a painting or a bottle of wine, the fundamentals behind the creative process are the same. Inspiration leads to conception, conception leads to creation, and in the wine world the end result is consumption, reflection and hopefully appreciation.
